IMPORTANT WARNING: This post mentions sensitive topics like Transphobia, rape and murder.
This is my first post in November, it is about a film I watched on Star+ this sunday.
I decided to watch it because it could give me inspiration to write Transgender characters for a fictional storyline, I tought I was going to be traumatized by it due to it's graphic scenes and because it was based on a real life case, but at the same time some of the characters are fictional.
While I liked it, I was still a bit horrorized by how Brandon was treated, but let's not forget this film came out in 1999 and is based in a case that took place in 1993, back when transgender people were not very accepted by general society.
While casting a cisgender actress as a trans male could be questionable nowadays this was understandable back when the film was made due to the lack of openly transgender actors and because the real life Brandon Teena never went under actual sex-change surgery even if he actually wanted it.
Hilary Swank did a good job portraying him, and truly looks like a man, but looks so teenage which made me compare Brandon with Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion, the music was my favorite part of the film sine I love old music, especially those from the late 80s-early 90s.
This film teaches us that we must accept everyone regardless of their gender identity.
